Missouri Shuffleboard

Affton Elks Lodge #2635 in St. Louis, Missouri, was the setting for the Seventh Annual Columbus Day Shuffleboard Tournament. Thanks to all those who participated, especially our friends from Steeleville, Arkansas, and several new players to tournament play from our local lodge membership. Friday’s ABC Draw started things off for everyone. Third Place went to Jack Murphy, Carol Weerts, and Andy Gorman. Second Place went to Terrie Boothe, Angie Coker, and Rick Green. First Place honors went to Rhonda Proffer, Florence Hicks, and Dennis Sandstrom.

Saturday brought the Bring Partner Tournament which drew the biggest turn out this tournament has ever experienced in its seven year history. So, thanks again to all you guys and gals for participating. Taking 5th/6th Place were the team of Larry and Jerry Romay and the team of Florence Hicks and Shirley Cothran. Fourth Place went to Robert Kasza and Manny Lane. Third place went to the team of Jill Romay and Steve Sheridan. Second Place honors went to the team of Mike Simpson and Dan Kelly. Our championship team was John Boyer and Frank Edelen. Congratulations to all of these teams.

Thanks also to Jill, Larry, and Jerry of that great Romay clan and to Doug Schmaltz, for all their assistance. I could not have run this tournament without you guys. Thanks also to Norm Sansone, Don Smith, and Claudette Michelle (and her friendly cart) for helping out with those thankless kitchen duties.

The tournament was a big success and one of the best ones I’ve ever had the privilege to organize. There was a lot of strong shooting. It was fun and exciting to watch these Columbus Day

competitors shooting so well and to see all the participants enjoying the camaraderie and good sportsmanship. Finally we were also able to raise almost $90.00 for the Elks Christmas basket fund from our 50/50 raffles. That money is going to go a long way to help needy families over the Christmas holidays!
