Bellflower,
CA – The tallest team in the third annual “Hot Summer
Nights” shuffleboard tournament was also the best team at
the Rosewood Pub’s popular “add to four” event
held August 12-13, at the Bellflower drinking establishment.
Huntington Beach’s
Jeff Posthumous and Hemet’s Bob “Cowboy” Wade,
both standing at least six foot - five inches tall, had little trouble
winning the tournament over a field of 11 other smaller shuffleboard
teams.
“We enjoyed ourselves
very much, it was a fun tournament,” said a smiling Posthumous
after a small victory celebration. “It may be the last time
that Cowboy and I will be able to play together at the Rosewood,
so we wanted it to be a big one.”
Both are on
the low side
of two rated players according to the Bower’s Rating System
and with no more than four California raters present for the tournament,
the chances are good that at least one or possibly both will be
rated as a one next year. That possibility of course does not add
to four. Such is the way of winning shuffleboard. The Rosewood Pub
hosts another “add to four” tournament on St. Patrick’s
Day weekend.
Posthumous and
Wade sailed through the tournament undefeated taking the championship
match from the second place team of Escondido’s Kenny Hawkes
and Bellflower’s Robert Davidson in two straight games late
Saturday evening. Brunskill and Huntington Beach’s Tony Phillips
finished in third place. Traveling the furthest was the team of
Modesto’s J.R. Noel and Phoenix, Arizona’s Lewis Bailey.
The visitors were also the high bid team in the sponsor sales held
on Friday.
Things
got started on Friday evening with Paramount’s Paul Weber
handling the team sponsor sales followed by tournament bracketing
handled once again in a professional manner by Yorba Linda’s
Bob Brunskill. Davidson served as the tournament director. Two rounds
were played Friday evening with the championship match held late
Saturday night.
The 12 teams contributed
to a $600 entry fee pool with $1,600 generated through the team
auction. The tournament also generated $76 toward the Bowers Rating
System with a 50/50 Draw held on Saturday. Bellflower’s Ernie
Alvarez won the ticket drawing.
Rosewood owners
B.B. Boik and Bud Taylor provided an all
day lunch buffet on Saturday with several players and patrons contributing
various side dishes.
Up next in Southern California
is the annual Billy Chiles Memorial Tournament held on Labor Day
weekend at Oskar’s Sports Bar & Grill in Bellflower. The
Rosewood owners have decided to hold an ABC Draw tournament during
the holiday season on a date yet to be determined.
