Bellflower, CA. – Escondido’s Dudley
Hutcherson and Santee’s John Osheroff won the Memorial
Day Doubles tournament, held annually at Oskar’s Sports
Bar & Grill in Bellflower, by sweeping through a field
of 11 other teams undefeated. The event paid out more than
$4,200. This year’s tournament marked the bar’s
seventh year as the event’s host.
It was
the second time that the San Diego county players have won
a major tournament within the last couple of years. In September
2003, the combination won the Billy Chiles Memorial Doubles
held at the Huntington Beach Moose Lodge. Hutcherson is
the number one rated player in Southern California and the
number two-rated player in California. San Diego’s
Gene Smith was the team’s sponsor.
In the
tournament opening ABC Draw it was the team of Visalia’s
Marion Bailey, Bellflower’s Mina Bischara and newcomer
Tim Mills from San Diego also going undefeated and beat
the team of Yorba Linda’s Bob Brunskill, and Huntington
Beach players Jeff Posthumous and Brenden Coulter in the
finals. The ABC Draw attracted 45 players and 15 teams and
paid out more than $4,400. Long Beach’s Gary Jones
sponsored the winning team
The
team of Bellflower’s Joanie Healey, San Diego’s
Gene Smith and Bellflower’s Bobbie Duncan finished
third with Highland’s Eric Chiles, Rosewood Pub owner

taking fourth place.
Placing
second to Hutcherson and Osheroff in the Doubles was the
Orange County team of Richard “Bubba” Warren
and John Fisher. El Monte’s “Free-Hand”
Bob Ruiz and Long Beach’s Susie Jones took home third
place in the open tournament that restricted two minus ones
from playing together. Bellflower’s Karl Spickelmier
and Bob Brunskill were the high sponsored team.
Buffets
were provided both Saturday and Sunday during the holiday
weekend with Anna Brunskill, Oscar Ugarte, Ernie Alvarez,
Hope Weber, Pearl Minard, B.B. Boik, Dave and Marlene Brennan,
Susie Jones, Al and Joanie Healey and Betsy Krier providing
their specialties for the food fare.
Tournament
Director Paul Weber, with valuable assistance from wife
Hope, conducted a 50/50 Draw that netted $206 for the Bower’s
Rating System. Bishop’s H.L. Lee won the drawing.
