Arizona champions
PHOENIX, Az. - Thanks to all that participated! We continue to
build on great shuffleboard camaraderie among the 3 great states
of California, Nevada and Arizona.
Three events and eight great-playing boards made this another
successful Bill Gibbs’ Tournament played again this year
at Six Shooter’s Bar in Phoenix, AZ. The weekend of April
29. The boards were donated by Lewis Shuffleboard and made this
a very competitive tournament with events for all levels of players.
The first event was an AB Draw with 52 players competing for six
places.
JR Noel (N. CA) and Lewis Bailey (AZ)
took first place beating out
Bob Crum (N. CA) and Steve Farnsworth (AZ)
in the event final. Third place went to
Larry Tafoya (AZ) and Dennis Bredvick
(AZ) followed up by a fourth place finish of
Tony Appell (AZ) and H.L. Lee (S. CA).
Tied for 5th & 6th place were the teams of
Bob Brunskil (S. CA) and Barbara Crum
(N.CA) and the team of
John Fisher (S. CA) and Dan Bitcon
(AZ).
An ABC Draw Team Event
started and finished on Saturday. The Calcutta and prize money
totaled
over $3,100 and paid out to four places. Finishing in a great
final the team of Danny Leach (NV), Mike
Parrish (AZ) and Lewis Bailey (AZ) put
Jane Mourgos (N. CA), Jim Stuart
(S. Ca) and Tom Ruff (AZ) in a respectable 2nd
place. Third place money went to
Georgene Brown (AZ), Virgil Jones
(N. Ca) and Tom Mills (S. CA). Coming in fourth
place was an all AZ team: Cindy Clark, Sharon
Chandler and Steve Farnsworth.
The final event was
an Open Doubles with 12 competitive teams competing for just under
$3,000. Three places were paid to a listing of teams that will
definitely promote the rivalry between our states. The first place
trophy belongs to the all Arizona team of
Wendall Herbison and Tony Appell who played a
very competitive final against the all California team of second
place trophy winners
Joe Muniz and Nick Chaffin. Third place was won
by the defending champion all Nevada team of Phil Fridley
and Jim Golden. An “honorable mention” goes
to the “all female” team of Jane Mourgos (N.
Ca) and Cindy Clark (AZ) taking fourth place.
